The Philippine Red Cross, GMA Kapuso Foundation (GMAKF), and Ever Commonwealth Mall held a blood donation drive, dubbed "Sagip Dugtong Buhay," at Ever Commonwealth Mall on February 17, 2024. The blood donation drive generated 1,674 bags of blood, which can save more than 6,000 lives.
PRC Chairman and CEO Richard "Dick" Gordon thanked the blood donors and acknowledged their sense of service, saying: "Helping other people needs practice. We forget things that we do not practice. We, at the PRC, salute you! Your willingness to donate blood, even though you may never know who gets it, is commendable."
Two highlights of the activity were the recognition of six blood donors who reached a milestone of donating one gallon of blood and the mobile collection of platelets via apheresis procedure. PRC Secretary-General, Dr. Gwen Pang explained the importance of the innovation, saying that the mobile apheresis machine can collect one blood component in 45 minutes instead of the usual one to two hours.
"We are collecting platelets, one of the many components of blood, for cancer and dengue patients. One unit of platelet is not enough for a dengue patient to survive. In this procedure, one donor can donate up to eight times as many platelets as a unit of platelets obtained from a whole blood donation," she added.
PRC, the foremost humanitarian organization in the country, and media company GMA Networks socio-civic arm, GMAKF, have been partners in blood donation drives for 28 years and have since then collected 68,000 units of blood together.
GMAKF founder Ms. Mel C. Tiangco turned over the blood donations to Dr. Pang, PRC Board Member, Gov. Ernesto Isla, PRC Quezon City Chapter Board Member, Dir. Joshua Aragon, and PRC Assistant Secretary-General for Programs Development & Services, Dr. Christie Monina Nalupta. GMAKF COO and Executive VP Ms. Rikki Escudero-Catibog, Ever Commonwealth Executive Vice President for Operations Ms. Evelyn Go, and Department Store Manager Ms. Dolly Eloriaga were also present at the ceremony.
