Junior Wrap: American Iva Jovic, 14, upsets No. 6 seed at 2022 US Open

On Day 2 of junior action at Flushing Meadows, 14-year-old Californian Iva Jovic saved three match points and came back from a 0-5 deficit in the third set—yes, you read that correctly—to defeat 2022 Roland Garros junior girls singles finalist and No. 6 seed Solana Sierra, 7-5, 2-6, 7-6. Sierra, who made the US Open girls singles semifinals in 2021, also led 7-4 in the final set tiebreak.

Jovic would ultimately come out on top, 11-9, converting her one and only match point on a double fault from Sierra. Shell next face the No. 9 seed, Victoria Mboko of Canada, in the third round.

Also on Day 2: The top-ranked Americans in both the boys and girls draws kicked off their Flushing Meadows campaigns. Nishesh Basavareddy, the No. 4 seed in the boys event, took out Switzerlands Dylan Dietrich, 6-3, 7-6. Basavareddy, who hails from Indiana, stayed steadier in a back-and-forth contest that featured 27 break points and was interrupted twice by rain. Its the second time Basavareddy has dismissed Dietrich from a Grand Slam, after his win in the junior event at Wimbledon earlier this summer.

Basavareddy next faces Belgiums Alexander Blockx in Round 2.

In the girls event, No. 3 seed and reigning Wimbledon junior girls’ singles champion Liv Hovde needed just 56 minutes to sail past Aruzhan Sagandikova of Kazakhstan, 6-1, 6-3. The Texas resident won 77% of her first serve points and hit 11 winners.

Other Americans advancing on Day 2 included 2022 Wimbledon boys singles finalist and New Jerseys Michael Zheng—who overcame British qualifier William Jansen, 6-2, 7-5—and another Californian, Kyle Kang, who completed a strong comeback of his own against a top player, defeating the No. 11 seed Jakub Nicod, of the Czech Republic, 2-6, 6-1, 6-1.

Just as on Day 1, a majority of the seeds continued to move forward in the draw, though some had to work a little bit harder to get the win. Girls No. 1 seed Sofia Costoulas of Belgium dropped the first set to American Valerie Glozman but fought back to win it in three, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. Costoulas compatriot Gilles Arnaud Bailly, the boys No. 2 seed, also dropped a set in his victory over Polands Olaf Pieczkowski, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.

No. 14 seed Yaroslav Demin overcame a strong effort from American Darwin Blanch to prevail, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5. The pair stayed even for the entire third set until the last game, when Demin was able to break the Floridian to claim the match. Its the second American in a row Demin has defeated, after he took out Nicholas Godsick in the first round.

No. 9 seed Coleman Wong avoided an upset as well, dropping the first set to Michigander Aidan Kim before ultimately prevailing in three, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Hours later, the two took the court again to face off in a first round boys doubles match. Wong and his partner Edas Butvilas received the No. 1 seed for the event, but Kim and his partner, Learner Tien, eventually came out on top, 6-7, 6-4, 1-0.

Conversely, the No. 1 seeds in the girls doubles draw, Lucie Havlickova and Diana Shnaider, made quick work of their opponents, advancing over Sandugash Kenzhibayeva and Aruzhan Sagandikova of Kazakhstan in 57 minutes, 6-2, 6-3.
