THE low pressure area (LPA) off Aurora has turned into a tropical depression named Maymay as Signal No. 1 was raised over at least six Luzon provinces, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said on Tuesday.
Weather specialist Aldczar Aurelio said the storm alert was up over Isabela, Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya, Aurora, Nueva Ecija, and the extreme northern portion of Quezon (General Nakar, Infanta), including Pollilo Islands.
Maymay was estimated some 300 kilometers east of Casiguran, Aurora with maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 55kph while moving south-westward at 10kph, Aurelio said.
The tropical depression is likely to make landfall in the southern portion of Aurora or northern portion of Quezon Wednesday afternoon or evening, he said.
Maintaining its category in the next 48 hours, the Pagasa weatherman said there is the possibility that Maymay may be downgraded into an LPA as it crosses Central Luzon.
Meanwhile, another tropical depression outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) was located some 1, 730kms east of Eastern Visayas while moving north-northweastward at 35kph, he said.
It has maximum sustained winds of 45kph and gustiness of up to 55kph, the weather bureau said.
Moderate to heavy with at times intense rains will be likely over Cagayan, Isabela and Apayao while light to moderate with at times heavy rains over Batanes, Ilocos Norte, Aurora and Kalinga until Wednesday morning due to Maymay and shearline, the state-run weather agency said.
Metro Manila and the rest of the country may experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms due to the localized thunderstorms.
