According to Cebu City Police Office director Col. Ireneo Dalogdog, the crowd gathered at the South Road Properties for the Sinulog Grand Parade as early as 8 a.m.
Amid scorching heat from the sun, some 21 dancing contingents performed with grace and color in honor of the Santo Niño or the Holy Child Jesus.
It was the second time for the Sinulog Grand Parade to be held at the South Road Properties, which used to be held in the city proper.
Aside from dancing contingents, this years Sinulog also had 50 colorful floats, 12 higantes and 9 puppeteers.
A drone show and fireworks display capped the parade.
The Philippine National Police (PNP) said the celebration of the Feast of Sto Niño across the country was "generally peaceful."
The PNP and other security groups deployed around 5,000 combined personnel to keep the celebration safe.
Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama reminded the public that the entire activity is an offering to the Santo Niño and a prayer for continuous miracles.
"Each one of us has a story to tell about the miracles. Today is a miracle. Yesterday is a miracle. Days before is a continuing miracle,” Rama said. “So ladies and gentlemen, lets pray for a continuous miracle."
Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco described the Sinulog festival as a fusion of faith, history and artistry, and reflects the best of the Filipino, which would captivate the world.
"The celebration of the Sinulog sa Sugbo Philippines, which resonates with the beating heart of the Philippines, the rich tapestry of our culture, our traditions and the warmth of our people, are unique facets of the Filipino identity that are invaluable assets that can captivate the entire world,” Fransco said. “The Sinulog festival is a testament to this truth."
