Ambassador Luc posted on X (formerly Twitter) that he got the legendary mambabatok’s signature three-dotted tattoo, done by tapping tools into the skin. He was also able to witness Apo Whang-Od take part in a traditional dance.
“What an incredible experience it was to meet Apo Whang-Od, the esteemed mambabatok and protector of a tradition that has been passed down for centuries,” he said.
“I wholeheartedly endorse her for the prestigious National Living Treasures Award in the [Philippines],” he added
The ambassador then thanked Tinglayan Mayor Atty. Sacrament Gumilab for facilitating the visit and the people of the Buscalan Tattoo Village for the warm welcome.
“The #cultural wealth they shared with us during our time together is a memory that I will cherish forever. It truly exemplifies the beauty of the #Philippines,” he said.
Last year, Apo Whang-Od was one of the cover stars of Vogue Philippines, where she exuded beauty and strength.
Michelle Dee paid tribute to the last mambabatok through her gowns for Miss Universe 2023 and her homecoming parade. She also called Apo Whang-Od an “amazing symbol of cultural preservation.”
